Cadoxton Ponds, Barry.
Latest Update.
17/03/2008
Please
see the revised rules for this Fishery.
For members not familiar with the area, the location of these new
ponds are adjacent to the Dow Corning site at the eastern end of
Barry Docks and access will be via a gate in the visitors car park
at the main Dow western entrance on the dock road itself. (for
members who used to fish the old Barry Reservoir the new water is on
the site of the old Swan pond as you come into the dock) Members
wishing to fish will have to show their Glamorgan Club licence at
the Security gate before parking. This is a requirement under HSE
regulations to account for all persons on site.
The restoration of the ponds has been a three-way partnership- Dow
Corning Ltd, Glamorgan Anglers Club Ltd and the Environment Agency
for Wales. The club has just received for the project a grant of
around £60,000 in objective 2 funding via the European Development
Fund which was achieved only by the hard work and time put in by
Andy Schofield and Joanne Larner from the Environment Agency. (Note
from the treasurer - modesty prevents Jon Taylor from claiming
credit as well, but, without the weeks of time and hard work devoted
by Jon, this project would never have come to fruition. Never in my
33 years of being associated with the club has an individual put so
much of his personal time into a project for the club, Jon deserves
all our thanks and praise for his efforts).
Members should not underestimate the size and cost of this project
and whilst the club has committed £20,000 (see the accounts at the
AGM), even after the additional funding achieved through EA, the
majority of the cost comes directly from Dow Corning. Without their
support and commitment shown by Terry Strange the Managing Director
of Dow this project would not have been possible.
To finally see this project to restore the Cadoxton Ponds become a
reality is a tribute to the excellent co-operation from all the
interested parties concerned. The new lakes will mark the Centenary
of Glamorgan Anglers Club in true style and provide a much needed
coarse angling facility in Barry that can be enjoyed by many people
for years to come.
Support for this project has also come from The Secretary of State
for Wales, Peter Hain MP who said’’ This is a superb example of
partnership between a major international investor in Wales,
environmental organizations, the local community and anglers.
Angling is a major recreational growth area and it is particularly
important that young people are encouraged to enjoy the sport and to
learn about nature and the countryside around them.
